When most people think about shooting steel targets they think of the classic paper and foam styled targets. The shooting world has entered a new era by bringing in new steel targets and there is still a lot to learn about them. I am here to answer all of your burning questions!
To answer your question up front… Are steel targets dangerous to shoot?
The answer is, it depends. Anything you are shooting at may become dangerous if you are not taking the correct safety precautions. Steel targets can become dangerous if they get a pitted deeper than ⅛” of an inch from prior shooting. By shooting quality AR550 and AR500 steel targets, you will greatly reduce pitting and the chances of ricochets. One of the main things you can do is to make sure you are well educated by reading any instructions that come with the targets or even doing a little googling to ease the minds of your loved ones. Most safety guidelines suggest staying 10 yards away with pistols and a minimum of 100 yards away if you are using a rifle.
There are a few things you can do to make shooting at AR500 steel targets safer, such as buying a mount system that holds the steel target at a 20 percent grade angle. The mounts angle, perfectly deflects any shrapnel straight to the ground. The mounts come in all sizes from a 2×4 mount to a t-post mount. These mounts are a great way to start with your new AR500 or AR550 steel target. Another way you can make your shooting experience the best it can be is by adding target looks to stop any unwanted “popping” off the mount of your targets; they are easy to install and super affordable. Targets loks hold your target in place making it easier to keep shooting round after round without stopping to reset your target.
Another thing to keep in mind is to ALWAYS wear eye and ear protection! I know you’ve heard it time and time again but if you want to be able to hear and see you might want to consider it, just sayin;) My personal favorites are Mack’s ear plugs; they are super comfortable and easy to wear all day without my ears getting sore so I highly recommend them! When It comes to safety glasses it’s the same thing: just find a pair that you would wear without feeling like you are going to get a headache from them squeezing your brains out, trust me we’ve all been there.
